CB Welcomes 4 new brothers this year

Brother Richard:
"I read the Christian Brothers handbook cover to cover on our cross country flight. After I had finished, I turned to my De La Salle boys and said, ‘I don’t ever want to hear you guys complain about your dress code,’" Br. Richard Hurlihy stated. Br. Rich, a.k.a. Duke, has been a brother for 20 years. He has worked in various places, ranging from a juvenile detention center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to De La Salle High School in Concord, California. Now, he has joined the Christian Brothers community as the new campus minister and a teacher of religious studies. Br. Rich is also a hero. On December 6, 1983 he saved a two-year-old girl from a burning building. Br. Rich ran in, brought her out to safety, and resuscitated her. For this heroic deed he was named a Honorary Fireman by the Pittsburgh Fire Department. CB is proud and grateful that he has joined the family.

Brother Dat:
Another addition to the Christian Brothers family this year is Brother Dat. He has also worked at De La Salle High School in Concord, California. Relatively new to the community, Br. Dat has been in the order since 1992. Brother is also new to our country, coming to the United States in 1989 after two years of traveling. He has traveled the world visiting places such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and the Philippines. Br. Dat enjoys many sports. Topping his list is fly fishing and backpacking. In fact, last summer, Br. Dat organized a week-long backpacking trip to the Sierras for his Brothers community.

Br. Dat has many jobs at CB. He is a teacher of religious studies and will be helping out Mrs. Gorman with Lasallian Youth. Although quiet, he has already contributed so much. Br. Dat is innovative and dynamic, a great addition to the community.

Brother Austin:
Teacher, massage therapist, dream interpreter... these are just a few of the words that describe one of the newest members to the Christian Brothers family, Brother Austin. Originally from Malta, a small island in the Mediterranean, this brother has taught in England, France, and Belgium. He joins us after living in the US for only five years. "I am very glad to be here in Sacramento," he stated.

"Swimming is my hobby," claimed this man who has been a brother for thirty years. He also enjoys gardening. "I love plants," he admitted with a bright smile.

Here at CB, Brother Austin teaches freshmen and sophomore English. "The students are very open to the learning process. They are very respectful," said he of his first pupils here at the school.

CB is privileged to have such an educated world traveler. Welcome, brother Austin.

Brother Philip:
Brother Philip has been in robes for forty-three years, and only recently has he been assigned to our Christian Brothers campus. With his lovable golden retriever, Duncan, and a passion for adolescent psychology, he is indeed a unique addition to CB.

Brother Philip is no newcomer to the world of education. He feels very privileged to have received a LaSallian Educator of the Year medal, as well as an award and medal from Pope John Paul II for his teaching efforts. "These are two things I feel very graced about receiving," he said. He is also director of the brothers and on the board of trustees.

In his free time, he enjoys reading and walking, and perhaps you can catch him and Duncan taking a stroll.

When asked what he thinks of the school, he said these kind words, "The hospitality and friendliness are beyond compare." Let's continue to show this welcoming spirit to Brother Philip and all of our new faculty.
