Clubs on Campus

Staff Writer

Students Reaching Out (SRO)- SRO is a club dedicated to keeping children aware of the problems and dangers involved in drugs, alcohol, and tobacco. Members go to area Catholic schools and talk to kids in 7th and 8th grade about their experiences and the experiences of their friends. The group is headed by seniors Pam Marshall, Brenna Ballesteros, and David Holquin, who says "The goal of SRO is to make at least one kid say no to drugs."

Amnesty International (AI)- AI is making a resurgence on the Christian Brothers campus. Previously, the club had lost membership and died. This time it is lead by Mr. Westmark, President Tia Koonse 12, and Vice President Chris Fernando 12. AI meets every Wednesday and Thursday. AI is a worldwide club founded in 1961. The objective of the club is to use letter-writing campaigns to free political prisoners who used nonviolent methods. The organization has over one million members worldwide and is established in more than eighty countries. AI hopes to make a big impact on Christian Brothers.

Native American Club- The Native American Club is dedicated to increasing the awareness of Native American traditions and culture on the Christian Brothers campus. The club also wants to bring a bit of this culture to the Christian Brothers community through this club. This crusade is lead by seniors Amy Higdon, as president, and Tammy Monson, as vice president.

Communion and Liberation (CL)- CL is more than a club. According to its members, it is a community. Ms. Peterson says of the club members, "More than anything else, we are friends." The club goes on trips and has philosophical discussions based on religion, life and the human spirit. CL meets weekly Wednesday in the morning. Ms. Peterson is in charge of the club and is assisted in part by senior Jennifer Patton. CL is a worldwide organization in sixty-seven countries, founded by Luigi Giussani approximately fifty years ago, and the tradition continues in the Christian Brothers community.

If a club would like to be featured in the Talon, all you have to do is ask. Just contact any of the Talon staff members.
