Cross Country blazes new trails |

"This
year, were hungry to blaze the trails, ready to take that three mile to the hole.
Were ready to rock, blast, and smoke anything that crosses our path." These are
the words of cross country captain, senior Chris Sherwood. Enthusiasm is running high, and
for good reason. Led by Sherwood, co-captain Chuck Schumacher, and seniors Justin Phipps
and Bryan Ballestero, the cross country team is looking to make a serious run at the Metro
Championship.
Being successful will take more than talent, but hard work is nothing
new for this group. Practices consist of running anywhere from 3 to 10 miles, to go along
with hill workouts and short distance intervals. Though the training can be a struggle at
times, Schumacher said it is one of the more enjoyable aspects of being on the team.
"The best part of running is being able to challenge yourself on a daily basis. The
result of all the hard work is extremely rewarding."
Much of the optimism is due to the arrival of new coach Jason Talanian. After just a
couple weeks, he is already drawing praise from his runners. Sherwood claimed that
Talanian is "one of the best coaches Ive ever had." "He really knows
the sport," added Phipps. With a new coach, a talented group of seniors, and some
promising lower division runners, it looks to be a successful season for the team. |
