Prerequisite: Freshman Literature and Composition A with a "B" grade
or permission of the instructor. |
This
course is structured around a literature-based writing curriculum. The emphasis is
developing higher level reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Literature
studied includes both traditional and contemporary selections designed to present the
literatures of the world in a historical context. This course is taught in collaboration
with the Accelerated World History and Geography II curriculum. The literature corresponds
with a historical period in order to expand and enrich the student's knowledge and
appreciation of the era. The sequence begins during "The Age of Discovery" and
ends in post-World War II. Fulfills the U.C. "b" and C.S.U. subject requirement. |

This
course is intended to expand writing and reading skills addressed in the freshman year.
The literature program involves continued work on reading comprehension, and introduction
to literary analysis and comparison, development of the student's appreciation of
literature, both as a means of entertainment and a source of questioning and insight.
Literary selections emphasize human relationships and personal growth, and discussion of
these works is strongly encouraged. Forms studied are the novel, short story, poetry, the
essay, and drama (stage, including Shakespeare). The phases of the writing process are
reviewed, along with strategies for developing unified, coherent essays. Beyond this
review, major attention is given to various types of writing and to creative writing
techniques. Efforts in composition are supported by units in grammar, including specified
areas, usage and mechanics. This course is taught in collaboration with the instructors of
World History and Geography II. Fulfills the U. C. "b" and C.S.U. subject
requirement. |

This
course is intended to expand upon those skills addressed in Freshman Literature and
Composition C. These skills include the development of writing and language, the
enhancement of reading comprehension and the improvement of study habits. Literature
selections include short stories, novels, drama, non-fiction and poetry. The stages of the
writing process are reviewed and particular attention is focused on the individual as a
writer. Periodic collaboration with the World History and Geography II C instructor occurs
within this course. This is a community college (2 year college) preparatory course. |
