Concert Band 10 Credits;
Year
Prerequisite: Open to students with a minimum of one year of instruction on their instrument or instructor's permission
This course is a performance-type class, rehearsing daily for three to four major concerts each year, as well as playing at athletic events, prayer services, liturgies and other special events. Rehearsals focus on preparing music from different styles and cultures, improving technique on individual instruments, working together for a proper blend and tone, basic music theory, music history, and proper care and use of instruments, as well as opportunities for solo and small ensemble work and conducting. Students are required to practice outside of class and are required to participate in all performances. Applicable to the U.C. "f" requirement one time. Fulfills C.S.U. subject requirement.

Jazz Band 10 Credits;

OFFERED OUTSIDE THE REGULAR SCHOOL DAY

Prerequisite: Audition required for admittance. Auditions are in the spring for the next year's Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors . Students must also be enrolled in Concert Band, unless waived by instructor.

The Jazz Band is a small ensemble of highly dedicated, advanced instrumental students. This group works on various styles of jazz, including traditional "Dixieland," be-bop, swing, fusion, and jazz rock. In addition, jazz theory and history are included in rehearsal times, as well as listening to recordings of great jazz artists. This group performs for prayer services, special events, community activities, and major concerts. Practice outside of class is required and private lessons are encouraged. Participation in all performances is required. If enough students audition, there may be a second band or combo. Applicable to the U.C. "f" requirement one time. Fulfills the C.S.U. subject requirement.

String Orchestra 10 Credits;
Year
Open to all students with instructor approval.
This course is a string ensemble consisting of violins, violas, cellos and bass violins, with other instruments added as needed. The students work on improving technique on their instruments, as well as learning some music theory and history. The music studied ranges from traditional chamber music to jazz, and music of other cultures. The string orchestra will perform three to four major concerts in addition to special events. Practice outside of class and participation in all performances are required. Applicable to the U.C. "f" requirement one time. Fulfills the C.S.U. subject requirement.

Honors Band 10 Credits;
Year
Prerequisite: Audition required for admission, A "B" or better in Band.
The Christian Brothers Honor Band performs music representing a variety of historical and contemporary musical styles. Band members learn highly advanced levels of instrumental technique, sight-reading, practice methods, and various performance skills. Students selecting this course are expected to practice outside of class one hour each day, and to participate in all performances. Private study with a professional specialist is also recommended. In most cases, students will need to provide their own instrument. Fulfills U.C. "f" and C.S.U. elective requirement pending U.C. approval.
