IC seeks CB's support

Famous at Christian Brothers for his witty sarcasm and make-up tips, our multi-talented Brother Kenneth left CB this year for a position as principal at Immaculate Conception Elementary School, and he needs this community’s help.

"I would never have imagined that I would be here, but I took an oath of duty, and this is what duty means," Brother says of his new job.

This is Brother’s first position as a principal, although his educational background is long and varied. He appears to have transitioned nicely. Excited greetings meet him at every turn, and children hang from his robes in adoration. "He’s the best principal I’ve ever worked with," exclaimed fifth grade teacher, Suzanne Hughes, "We love him."

The Christian Brothers District is assessing Immaculate Conception for adoption as the first Christian Brothers Elementary School in three years. The District chose at that time to direct only secondary schools, but is now looking to adopt primary schools again. Brother Kenneth’s mission is to determine whether Immaculate Conception would make an appropriate choice.

A Succeed school located in a low-income area, Immaculate Conception educates children of every financial background. The Succeed schools are a group of inner-city Catholic elementary schools (others include St. Anne’s and St. Peter’s) who have combined efforts in raising support, funds, and standards. They rely on the community to help produce the necessary changes.

Brother Kenneth has asked CB students to help support Immaculate Conception by donating Campbell’s Soup labels, money, and time to the school. Already, efforts by the Lasallian Youth and volunteers have helped immensely. The Lasallian Youth plans to paint the school on October 25. See Sr. Maria for information on future plans. Give soup labels to Ms. Hilandera, in the library.

Tutors and anyone who wishes to spend time with the kids are greatly needed. Brother Kenneth has asked CB to hold Halloween and Easter events for the students, as well as choral performances.

"These kids need support and encouragement," says Brother Kenneth, "just a half-hour of time with a CB volunteer does them a world of good."
